Chenille, the French word for caterpillar, is typically used to describe a type of fabric. Although the names of many fabrics (such as mohair and wool) are derived from the fibres with which they are made, chenille is not amongst them. It is named from the unique process by which it is made. According to textile historians chenille-type yarn is a recent technique, believed to have originated in 18th century France.
